Hungry while travelling from one place to another?  No lunch at work? Craving for a mid night snack? Sounds familiar right? In all of these situations it is so easy to go for an unhealthy to-go meal. These to-go meals are convenient because they require minimum effort and are ready within seconds. I am talking about pizza’s, french fries, sandwiches, hamburgers, croissants etc. These meals however are super unhealthy when eaten on a daily basis. Instead we want to show people other options that are easy, fast but healthy. Nutritious meals such as a Vexx Organic Shake.

Unhealthy fast food vs. healthy fast food

In order to show you that a fast meal can also be healthy we compare two fast food meals. One healthy fast food option (Vexx) and one unhealthy option ( Hamburger). From a nutrition perspective it was interesting to take a look at saturated fats, trans fats, sodium and cholesterol.

hamburger nutrition

Saturated fats

Saturated fat is a so called “bad” fat . Food types that are rich in saturated fats are animal-based. So meat and dairy products, including  red meat, milk, cheese and butter. Eating foods that contain saturated fats raises the level of cholesterol in your blood. High levels of LDL cholesterol in your blood increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. Your usual hamburger has 12 grams of saturated fat.

Trans fats

Trans fats are extremely unhealthy. Trans fat can make food taste good, last longer on grocery-store shelves, and is very bad for your heart. Trans fat can be found in fried food, snacks, creamers and baked goods.A hamburger contains 1.5 grams of trans fats. This doesn’t sound like a lot but it actually is. You shouldn’t eat trans fats at all!

Unsaturated fats

You should replace foods high in saturated fats with foods high in monounsaturated and/or polyunsaturated fats. These unsaturated fats are healthy for your body and can be found in avocado, nuts, soybean, canola, olive oils and Vexx. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of total fat per day is 65 grams for a person that takes in 2000 calories a day. Try to maintain a diet that is low in saturated fats and trans fats and high in unsaturated fats to stay healthy.

Sodium is a mineral, and one of the chemical elements found in salt. Too much sodium in your system causes your body to hold on to water. This can increase your blood pressure. The recommended daily allowance for sodium is 2400 mg. One Vexx meal contains 188 mg which is very minimal. A hamburger however contains  910 mg. Which is almost half of your daily intake. Sodium affect your blood pressure badly, potassium however has a positive effect on your blood pressure. So try to eat foods low in sodium and high in pottasium. Vexx for example has 30 % of your RDA of pottasium.
